No more business as usual, says Leuthard

Swiss President Doris Leuthard has urged the world’s nations to learn something from the economic crisis.

As the guest of honour at the International Labour Conference in Geneva, Leuthard addressed a crowd of 2,000 delegates from more than 150 nations on Wednesday.

“We shouldn’t try to go back to ‘business as usual,’” said Leuthard, citing lingering problems such as unemployment and underemployment.

Instead she called for a new worldwide system to regulate the financial market.

Leuthard also said it was unacceptable that certain companies could take risks that compromised the entire world economy.

The annual conference is run by the International Labour Organization (ILO). This year’s themes include employment, workers’ rights, HIV/Aids in the workplace, child labour and domestic work.

Switzerland has endorsed standards to regulate domestic labour in order to improve workers’ conditions.
