Swiss aid focuses on hunger

Fighting hunger is the priority of Swiss development aid, Switzerland’s Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). said on Thursday.

Switzerland supports small-scale farmers by introducing them to modern farming methods, providing drought-resistant seeds, improving access to credit and developing local markets, SDC officials said at their annual media conference.

It not only supports research institutes in developing countries but also promotes direct cooperation between researchers in Switzerland and abroad.

The SDC said Swiss aid in this area was part of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) adopted by the United Nations in 2009. The goals include halving world poverty by 2015.

The agency is currently involved in preparatory work for an international conference on the MDG to be held in September.
