Strike action by French lorry drivers is likely to cause havoc on the Swiss border as it did during a similar protest three weeks ago (picture). Geneva and Basel are likely to be hardest hit.

The strike, which is expected to last two days, is part of an ongoing dispute between drivers and employers over the introduction of a 35-hour working week.

Many parts of France and borders with neighbouring countries will be blockaded by the drivers.

The Swiss crossing points at Geneva and Basel were patrticularly badly affected during the last stoppage. The drivers had said only trucks would be blockaded, but their action caused long tailbacks for car-users on the Swiss side of the border.
