Switzerland will send up to 2,000 cows and calves to Kosovo to help replenish the stock of animals and supply fresh milk in the war-ravaged Serbian province, the authorities said Friday.
“Many farmers in Kosovo are left with no livestock, and in other areas conflict has sharply reduced herds. Quick action is needed, as on-the-spot checks have shown,” the Foreign Ministry said.
The programme by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, the Agriculture Ministry and the National Farmers Association is to start next month.
“This should help restore livestock in Kosovo so that urgently needed milk can be produced locally in winter,” the ministry said.
The cow transport is part of a wider agricultural support programme for Kosovo. The Swiss government has approved SFr100 million ($66.7 million) in aid for the Serbian province.
