Bregy named as Zurich’s new coach
Georges Bregy has been named as the new coach of FC Zurich. Bregy, who replaces former coach, Gilbert Gress, will take charge from the start of next season.
The former Swiss international has signed a two year contract with the club, which means he will be bidding farewell to his current team, Thun, where he has been for just over two-and-a-half years.
His second-in-command will be Walter Grüter, who completed a difficult season this year with Winterthur.
Bregy was not, however, the club’s first choice of new coach. The job was initially offered to Köbi Kuhn, who was selected as the Swiss national team’s coach on Sunday.
Kuhn with bigger fish to fry could not accept the post in Zurich and Sven Hotz, the club’s president, was faced with two contenders, Bregy and Pierre-André Schürman.
Hotz’s decision was a difficult one with both men having good credentials and valuable past experience.
Bregy holds 54 international caps and played for Sion and Lausanne as well as Young Boys Bern during his professional football career before becoming a coach.
