Engadine takes kite flying to extremes

Have sail, will surf on Lake Silvaplana. swiss-image.ch

The high alpine, wind-swept lake of Silvaplana will be the site of international "kite surf" and wind surfing competitions beginning this weekend.

The Kite Surf World Cup events kick off on the lake in the eastern Engadine valley on August 11, followed by international wind surfing competitions three days later.

Hundreds of amateur kite and wind surfers are expected to take part in the events alongside the world’s best, including Switzerland’s Karin Jaggi and Hawaii’s Josh Stone.

Spectators are expected to be out in numbers to enjoy the acrobatic skills of the surfers against the rugged mountain backdrop of the Engadine. A “trend village” will be set up to accommodate visitors and participants, and a “surf party” is planned for August 17.

Alphorns and guitars

Elsewhere in Switzerland, the resort of Zermatt is hosting a Swiss folklore festival on August 15. More than 40 traditional groups will take part in the parade and performances.

In the western town of Neuchâtel, street performers will take over the old town for the annual Buskers’ Festival, which takes place this year from August 13 to 17.

For travellers planning to visit Lucerne, there will be a large firework display over the lake on August 10, as part of the town’s “Seenachtsfest”.
