Hundreds remember Furgler in St Gallen

Several hundred people have attended a funeral service for former cabinet minister Kurt Furgler in his home city of St Gallen.

Mourners at the St Gallen Cathedral on Tuesday included Economics Minister Doris Leuthard, Finance Minister Hans-Rudolf Merz and eight former members of cabinet.

Furgler died last week at the age of 84. The Christian Democrat had served as justice minister and as economics minister and held the rotating post of Swiss President three times between 1972 and 1986.

Former cabinet minister Flavio Cotti eulogised Furgler as a brilliant thinker, and praised him for his integrity and his devotion for Switzerland.

Furgler had a reputation as a reformer. He brought about changes to adoption laws and legislation concerning children and marriage, as well as the acceptance of the constitutional article enshrining equal rights for men and women.
