Medal hopes dashed for equestrian team

Keystone

Switzerland has finished fourth in the equestrian team competition at the Beijing Olympics losing its top position it held after the first round.

The United States won the event on Monday after a jump off against Canada and ahead of Norway which came in three points clear of the Swiss team.

Christina Liebherr on No Mercy collected 23 penalty points and Steve Guerdat’s Jalisca Solier hesitated at the ditch, while Pius Schwizer on Nobless and Niklaus Schurtenberger on Cantus put in solid performances.

The favourites Germany fared even worse and finished a disappointing fifth.

After a first day of competition on Sunday Switzerland and the US were leading the table of the nine-nation event.

Guerdat, Schwizer and Schurtenberger have qualified for the final of the jumping individual competition on Thursday.
