Savoldelli retakes lead in Romandie
Swiss riders Roland Meier, Sven Montgomerie and Christian Sidler all attempted breakaways on Thursday's second road stage of cycling's Tour de Romandie, but it was Italy's defending champion Paolo Savoldelli who finally took the day's honours in Vevey.
Winner of Tuesday’s opening prologue, the Saeco team cyclist won Thursday’s 171-kilometre stage from Tramelan in four hours and seven minutes to snatch the overall leader’s green jersey back from Australia’s Bradley McGee.
After joining Savoldelli in a breakaway some five kilometres from the finish line, Meier dropped back to fifth in the final sprint. Fellow Swiss rider Oscar Camenzind took seventh place to move up to fourth in the overall rankings behind Savoldelli, Dario Frigo and Felix Garcia.
On Friday the riders are due to compete in a 25.5-kilometre time trial, starting and ending in Payerne-La Broye.
