Slalom hopes dashed in Adelboden

Austria's Mario Matt has won the World Cup slalom in the Swiss resort of Adelboden ahead of his team-mate Benjamin Raich.

None of the Swiss athletes qualified for the second leg of Sunday’s race after Marc Berthod and Daniel Albrecht both went out in the first run.

It is Matt’s eighth World Cup slalom victory, but the first this season.

Felix Neureuther of Germany came third, while the best-placed American Jimmy Cochran finished in the top eight.

His compatriots Bode Miller and Ted Ligety failed to finish the race in slushy conditions.

On Saturday the Swiss men’s alpine team celebrated a rare one-two victory in the giant slalom competition in Adelboden.

The World Cup circuit now moves to nearby Wengen for the prestigious Lauberhorn races next weekend.
