Surprise defeat for Wawrinka at Swiss Open
Swiss number two Stanislas Wawrinka has crashed out of the Swiss Open tennis tournament in Gstaad.
Wawrinka, the world’s tenth-ranked player, lost to Romanian Victor Hanescu in the semifinal, 3-6, 6-3, 4-6.
His previous match, a marathon win over Argentinean Guillermo Cañas on Friday, had been a close call.
“I missed my chances, this is very disappointing,” said Wawrinka, who will now go on to the Montreal Masters.
“When I had the lead I was unable to maintain my level.”
Hanescu will now meet either Russia Igor Andreev or Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain in the final.
Wawrinka lost in his fourth-round match against Russian Marat Safin at Wimbledon earlier this month.
