Swiss men suffer third defeat in world curling championships
The Swiss men's curling team have suffered their third defeat in seven matches at the World Championships in Lausanne.
In a one-sided match against Sweden, Switzerland were unable to pick up a single point in the first three ends. Two points in the fourth end were not enough to save the team from defeat, and they went down 9-2.
Swedish skipper Peter Lindholm and his team took control from the second end, when they scored three points. A further three points in the sixth and in the final end were enough to secure victory.
After a promising start to the championships, Roland Moser’s men now face a challenge to reach the semi-finals. Switzerland next go into a tough encounter with Finland in the penultimate match of the first round.
The Finnish team defeated Canada 8-2 on Tuesday and will be looking for victory over the Swiss to boost their own chances of a place in the last four.
The Swiss women’s team, meanwhile, are now just one match away from leaving the tournament without a single win to their name. Nadja Heuer’s Solothurn side suffered their eighth defeat in eight games on Wednesday, losing 9-4 to Sweden.
With just two ends to play, Heuer’s team trailed by just five points to four, and appeared to be in with an unexpected chance against a side currently joint top in the women’s standings. But the Swedes surged ahead with four points in the ninth end to heap more misery on the Swiss women.
On Thursday, Switzerland will have their last chance to register a win, albeit academic, when they face high-flying Canada in the final qualifying round.
