Nicola Spirig has come sixth in the women's Olympic triathlon, missing the podium by just 34 seconds.

Australia’s Emma Snowsill won gold in the endurance competition ahead of Portugal’s Vanessa Fernandez and Australian Emma Moffatt.

Switzerland’s Daniela Ryf came seventh, while Magali Di Marco finished 13th.

“I’m very happy with the result. I knew a medal was only possible in a best-case scenario, but the other competitors would not let me get away in the cycling event,” said Spirig.

All three Swiss were part of a leading group of 19 athletes after the 1.5km swimming and 40km cycling, but fell behind in the final 10km running.

It is the first time in the brief history of the Olympic triathlon that Switzerland failed to win a medal.

At the 2000 Games in Sydney Brigitte McMahon clinched gold, while Di Marco won bronze. Sven Riederer came third in the men’s event in Athens four years ago.
