Swiss tennis medal guaranteed
Roger Federer's dream of an Olympic medal is certain to be fulfilled, after he and Stanislas Wawrinka won their semifinal doubles match against the top-seeds on Friday.
Federer and Wawrinka beat the US twins Bob and Mike Bryan 7-6, 6-4, to win a place in the final and a guaranteed gold or silver medal.
Their success comes a day after Federer’s disappointing defeat in the quarterfinals of the men’s singles.
It was the second game of the day for the Swiss pair: they first had to complete their rain-delayed match against the Indian couple Mahesh Bhupati and Leander Paes, which they won 6-2, 6-4.
In Saturday’s final they meet the Swedes Thomas Johansson and Simon Aspelin, who battled their way through against the French pair Arnaud Clement and Michael Llodra, finally winning 7-6, 4-6, 19-17.
Meanwhile James Blake, the man who defeated Federer in the singles on Thursday, was himself beaten by Fernando Gonzalez of Chile 4-6, 7-5, 11-9.
