Swiss women well placed in California
Swiss tennis players Emmanuelle Gagliardi and Martina Hingis are both through to the third round of the $2.1 million Indian Wells tennis tournament in California.
Hingis beat Croatia’s Silvija Talaja in straight sets 6-0, 6-1.
Hingis, the 1998 tournament winner, was unsure if she would play after experiencing pain in her right wrist.
But after an acupuncture treatment Hingis said her wrist was “almost perfect” – a description which could be applied to her game.
She committed just 11 unforced errors and won 55 of 79 points in a match that lasted just 41 minutes.
Hingis will face Russia’s Jelena Lichowtsewa in the next round.
Gagliardi vs Montolio
Gagliardi made short work of her opponent, the Spanish player, Angeles Montolio, winning 6-1, 6-4 .
Gagliardi played a strong game earning a well deserved victory. Her win was particularly impressive as Montolio is ranked 24th, 46 places above the Genevan player.
Gagliari will face Slovakia’s Janette Husarova in the next round. The draw bodes well for the Swiss player, who beat Husarova 6-1, 6-1 in New Zealand earlier this year.
