Federer named ATP Player of the Month

After a successful month on the tennis court, Federer has received recognition from the ATP Keystone Archive

Switzerland's number one men's tennis player, Roger Federer, has been named the ATP Player of the Month for February after capturing the first title of his career.

The award is given to the player who performs best in the ATP champions league, a ranking system based on results from 2001.

The Swiss teenager began the month by winning the first ATP title of his career in Milan. He followed up this success by reaching the finals in Rotterdam and the semi-finals in Marseille.

Federer’s achievements this year mean that he has now moved up from a ranking of 29th in the ATP champions race at the start of the year to sixth position.

Including two singles Davis Cup wins in Switzerland’s victory over the United States, the Swiss player clocked up a 14-2 record during February.

Federer beat off competition from Yevgeny Kafelnikov, victor in the Marseille tournament, France’s Nicolas Escude and Spain’s Fernando Vicente, all of whom were in the running for the player of the month award.
