In the match lasting 102 minutes the score was 6-3, 7-5, 7-6.

The 2.08-metre Croat is known for his powerful serve, but Federer broke him twice in the first set. Karlovic never faced set point himself.

Federer's next opponent will be Germany's Tommy Haas who defeated Novak Djokovic. It will be the Swiss's 21st consecutive semifinal in a grand slam tournament.

He is aiming for his sixth Wimbledon victory, which would give him a record 15 grand slam titles.

If he wins, he will regain the number one ranking which he lost to Rafael Nadal last summer. Injury forced Nadal to withdraw from this year's tournament.
