Hingis and Federer make flying start

Hingis and Federer had plenty to smile about Keystone

Switzerland have made an emphatic start in their bid to win the Hopman Cup mixed doubles tennis tournament. Martina Hingis and Roger Federer opened their campaign with a 3-0 win over Thailand.

Hingis maintained her impressive run at the Burswood Dome by thrashing Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-1, 6-1. The world number one is competing in her fourth Hopman Cup and is yet to beaten in any of her singles matches.

Federer guaranteed a Swiss victory with a straight sets win over Paradorn Srichapan (6-4, 6-2), before joining Hingis in a powerful display of doubles. The hapless Thai pair, finalists at last year’s Hopman Cup, took just one game as Hingis and Federer cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 triumph.

Having taken an early lead in their group, the Swiss pair are next due to face their Australian hosts on Wednesday. Their final group match is on Friday against the South African fourth seed pairing of Amanda Coetzer and Wayne Ferreira.
