Switzerland's Martina Hingis, the world tennis number one, is through to the third round of the Wimbledon tournament. She beat China's Jing-Qian Yi in straight sets to secure her place.

Yi, the world number 78, fought bravely in the first set, a 42 minute duel which ended 6-4 in Hingis’ favour. Hingis got back into her stride in the second set, smashing her opponent 6-1.

She goes on to face Croatia’s Silvia Talaja, who is ranked number 22.

It was a successful day for Hingis, who also won her first round doubles match, partnering France’s Mary Pierce. The pair swiftly despatched Florencia Labat of Argentina, and Thailand’s Tamarine Tanasugarn, 6-1 6-2.

There was no joy in the doubles for Swiss pair Emmanuelle Gagliardi and Patty Schnyder. They lost their first round doubles match to Sweden’s Asa Carlsson and France’s Emilie Loit, 7-6 6-2.
