Man killed by explosion at Dublin homeless shelter

DUBLIN (Reuters) – An army bomb disposal team carried out a controlled explosion at a Dublin homeless hostel on Thursday after a man was killed in a blast that destroyed his room but left other residents uninjured.

Irish police are investigating the cause of the first explosion but suspect an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated underneath the victim’s bed, according to the Irish Independent.

The bomb disposal team carried out a controlled explosion as part of the security clean-up operation at the Depaul shelter on Dublin’s Little Britain Street.

The victim, a man aged in his 30s, died instantly as a result of the suspected IED blast.

More than 50 residents were evacuated from the hostel as a result of the blast which caused significant structural damage.
