Disney lab in Zurich wins Tell award

A new Disney research centre in Zurich, which specialises in computer animation, has won an award for technology and innovation investment in the Greater Zurich Area.

The Tell Awards, named after Swiss national hero William Tell, recognise investment projects directed into Switzerland by North American firms. They are organised by Switzerland Trade and Investment Promotion.

The award announced on Thursday is considered a mark of recognition to the Walt Disney Company of Los Angeles for successfully launching operations of Disney Research Zurich (DRZ).

The DRZ, which works closely with computer scientists from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, was officially launched at the end of April and is currently involved in more than 30 projects.

One, for example, is working on capturing and animating realistic representations of human faces for use by Disney’s animation studios, game divisions and theme parks.

The award will be presented to the DRZ at the Swiss embassy in Washington on November 8.
