Interactive graphic Different routes, different modes of transport

The new Gotthard rail tunnel allows travelers to cross the Swiss Alps in just 20 minutes. But if you prefer a more leisurely pace, and learning more about the iconic Swiss massif, you could choose a different mode of transport – or even take on the old mountain road by foot.

The new short crossing time is due to the almost straight route and trains that can reach 250 km/hour (155 miles/hour). Click on the animation below to compare the times needed via different modes of transport – old and new – to cross the Gotthard from Erstfeld to Biasca.
