Survey backs slow shift from nuclear power
Most Swiss favour shutting down nuclear power stations but do not want to act too hastily, according to a Swiss Business Federation commissioned survey.
Polling institute gfs.Bern found 67 per cent of respondents would vote for ending nuclear power, while 84 per cent agreed that a solution guaranteeing the power needs of Switzerland should not be rushed through.
Just 29 per cent backed nuclear power, but that figure rose to 41 per cent when it involved replacing ageing power stations and bringing them in line with new safety standards.
A total of 65 per cent said they would pay more for electricity from other sources.
In the past the federation, economiesuisse, has described the cabinet’s desire to end nuclear power as “irresponsible”.
The survey interviewed 1,005 people before the cabinet’s May 25 decision to gradually phase out nuclear power in Switzerland by 2034.
The government’s recommendation is being discussed this month and a final decision is expected within weeks.
