An explosion at the Tätsch test and training facility in Illnau-Effretikon in canton Zurich on Wednesday, February 25, sent shockwaves up to 10 kilometres across the surrounding area. “My building was shaking,” said my colleague who lives in Winterthur.
A private explosives company was attempting to destroy several hundred kilograms of material at the site. The explosives were meant to burn but detonated instead, creating a crater several metres wide. Two people sustained minor injuries. Investigations are ongoing, according to Zurich cantonal police.
