Swiss expats push for e-voting

The Organisation of the Swiss Abroad (OSA) has called for the introduction of electronic voting for expatriate citizens.

The organisation, which is based in Bern, said the current situation was untenable since Swiss voters abroad were treated like people living in Switzerland.

The organisation said many of its members complained that ballot papers often arrived late, were not complete or were sent in the wrong language version.

In May a parliamentary committee rejected the call by OSA saying the shortcomings could be reduced with an awareness campaign among local and cantonal authorities.

The organisation represents nearly 700,000 Swiss living abroad. Around 120,000 are registered to vote in elections and nationwide ballots.
