Swiss pair win at last

Federer celebrates his first singles win at this year's Hopman Cup tournament Keystone

Roger Federer and Miroslava Vavrinec have bowed out of the Hopman Cup mixed tennis tournament on a winning note, after defeating Argentina 2-1 at the Perth event.

The Swiss boyfriend-girlfriend team won the dead rubber’s deciding doubles match, beating Paola Suarez and Mariano Zabaleta 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (10-4).

In the women’s singles, Suarez had earlier defeated Vavrinec 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 before Federer levelled the match for Switzerland with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Zabaleta in the men’s singles.

Too late

Thursday’s victory came too late to help Switzerland defend their Hopman Cup title with two previous defeats having already ruled out Swiss participation in the final.

The Australian duo Lleyton Hewitt and Alicia Molik delivered a 3-0 defeat to the Swiss pair on Tuesday. The final nail in the coffin came when Federer and Vavrinec were beaten by their Spanish rivals, Tommy Robredo and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario.
