Federer falls in third round of US Open
Roger Federer has been knocked out of the third round of the US Open by Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero. In the women's game, the world number one, Switzerland's Martina Hingis, had her match interrupted by rain and will finish on Monday.
Federer did himself proud against the 12th seeded Ferrero, matching the Spaniard almost game for game. He lost the first set 5-7, and took the second to a tiebreak, before losing it 6-7.
In the third set, Federer powered ahead, dropping just one game, and putting himself firmly back in the match. Rain delayed play at 4-4 in the fourth set and, when the players returned, Federer pressed home his advantage, taking the score to 6-5.
It seemed certain the match would go to a fifth set but, as had happened before in this match, Federer gave away his advantage at precisely the wrong moment. Ferrero seized his chance, taking the set 7-6, and the match.
Martina Hingis had a better showing against France’s Sandrine Testud before their match was stopped because of rain. The world number one took the first set 6-2, and was leading 1-0 in the second when played was suspended. The match should finish on Monday.
A victory for Hingis would pit her against Monica Seles in the quarterfinals.
