Fewer killed in road accidents
The number of people killed in accidents on Swiss streets has gone down for the third year in a row.
A total of 328 people died in traffic accidents in 2010 – 21 victims fewer than in 2009, reported the Swiss Council for Accident Prevention on Tuesday.
While there was a decline in the number of deaths and serious injuries involving cars, motorcycles and bicycles, there was an increase in pedestrian fatalities. The number of victims rose from 60 in 2009 to 76 in 2010.
The council attributed the drop in injuries and deaths to advances in automotive technology, improved infrastructure and better policing.
However, it expressed its concern over the fatal pedestrian accidents. It said that there had been more incidents occurring outside of pedestrian crossings.
