Hingis faces Serena Williams in Canadian Open final

Switzerland's Martina Hingis has a good reason to celebrate after winning the du Maurier tournament on Sunday Keystone

The world number one tennis player, Switzerland's Martina Hingis, is to battle the United States' star, Serena Williams, to defend her title at the Canadian Open final in Montreal.

Hingis, the top seed who won this tournament last year in Toronto, defeated Conchita Martinez of Spain 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals on Saturday.

Williams ousted two-time Canadian Open champion Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain 6-2, 6-4.

“That’s great. I always look forward to playing her,” Williams said of the final pairing. “It’s an opportunity to play the top player in the world and to measure where you are.”

Hingis has only won three of their seven meetings with Williams. The American has won the last three times they met including last week in the semifinals at Los Angeles, where Williams prevailed in three sets.

“My advantage is that I’m quicker. I don’t carry that much muscle and weight around,” said Hingis. “But I have to be the first to attack, not her,” she added.

Before Williams played, Hingis said she hoped to meet her in the final. “You want to see how you’re doing, whether I have improved from last week and how it will be at the (upcoming) US Open,” Hingis said.
