Schnyder falls to Serena Williams in Montreal

Switzerland's number two women's tennis player, Patty Schnyder, has been soundly beaten by Serena Williams in the du Maurier Open in Montreal, Canada.

Schnyder didn’t stand a chance against Williams, winning only one game in the first set and two in the second. The victory brings the Williams’ sisters – Serena and Venus – a little closer to their declared aim of winning the top two spots in the world rankings.

“That’s our ultimate goal,” said Serena Williams, after the match. She is currently ranked seventh on the WTA tour, while her sister, Venus, is ranked third.

The world number one seed, Switzerland’s Martina Hingis, had an easy victory in her match against Russia’s Nadejda Petrova 6-1, 6-3, although Hingis trailed 1-3 in the second set.

There was a mixed result for Switzerland’s men’s players in the ATP tournaments in the United States. Lorenzo Manta defeated Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in the second round of the ATP tour in Washington.

But his compatriot, Michel Kratochvil, was knocked out of his second-round match in Indianapolis, losing to 11th-seed, Albert Costa of Spain. After dropping the first set, 6-1, Kratochvil managed to win the second in a tie-break. He held on admirably in third, eventually losing it 6-4.
