St Gallen retake lead in league table

St Gallen player, Charles Amoah (centre) scores his first of two goals against Sion Keystone

St Gallen have retaken the lead from Lugano in Switzerland's first division football league table after beating Sion 3-1 on Friday.

After just half an hour of play the 3-1 final result was achieved with Charles Amoah scoring two and Marco Zwyssig one for St Gallen.

Blaise Piffaretti saved Sion from a goalless performance by equalising in the 8th minute.

In the second half of the match, the reigning Swiss champions, St Gallen, played a largely defensive game. They were keen to not waste their energy reserves ahead of Wednesday’s return leg against Galatasaray Istanbul.

However, St Gallen fans were in for a treat in the first half as they witnessed two beautiful headers from Amoah into Sion’s goal in the 5th and 23rd minute. His goals had been assisted with passes from Luiz Filho Jairo and Jerren Nixon.

Zwyssig went on to make it 3-1 in the 26th minute when the Valais team made some serious defensive errors.

The Trinidadian national team player, Nixon, looked impressive for St Gallen, while Sion’s midfielder, Marc Hottinger, had a bad match.
