British group creates jobs in Biel

The British data transmission group, Ecom, has chosen the town of Biel to house its new technology communication centre in a move which will create between 100 and 150 jobs.

Ecom will invest about SFr100 million ($61 million) in the centre, which will offer a range of services to multinational companies and financial institutions.

The mayor of Biel, Hans Stöckli, said the arrival of Ecom would strengthen the town’s reputation in the communications sector.

Biel is also home to the Federal Communications Office and has branches of Orange, diAx, BNS, IXOS Software International, Conduit Europe and Aseantic Media.

The founder of Ecom, Joseph Adir, said he had chosen Biel because of its geographical situation, its proximity to universities and because it had a working population that could adapt to the demands of the industry.

Cantons Jura and Valais had also been under consideration.
