Poor report card for nuclear power plants

Two of Switzerland’s nuclear power plants – in Beznau and Gösgen – did not perform so well in 2009.

The Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI) has rated them as “satisfactory” but not “good”.

At a press conference in Bern on Wednesday, ENSI cited a safety incident in Beznau as the reason why it did not receive better marks. Last August, two workers were exposed to unsafe radiation levels while doing maintenance work.

ENSI criticised the Gösgen plant for its handling of a minor incident and for its reports, some of which were tardy or of poor quality.

The other two, located in Leibstadt and Mühleberg, scored good marks.

Discussions are underway regarding the opening of two additional nuclear power plants in Switzerland.
