Slight increase reported in unemployment

The number of people unemployed in Switzerland rose from 3.3 to 3.4 per cent in January, with the jobless rate climbing once again.

According to figures released on Wednesday by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, 134,317 people were getting unemployment benefit at the end of January, 3,655 more than in December.

The jobless rate for the 15-24 age bracket was also slightly higher at 3.5 per cent and concerned 19,417 people.

Compared with January 2011, however, overall numbers were down by 9.7 per cent.

The number of people seeking a job rose to 187,417, while the number of still available places rose to 17,471, up 16.2 per cent.
