Unemployment drops in March

The unemployment rate was down to 3.4 per cent in March, down 0.2 per cent from February and 18.7 per cent compared with the same month in 2010.

The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco) said on Friday 31,127 fewer people claimed unemployment insurance last month than in March 2010.

The most significant decrease was registered among young people (15-24 years of age). The rate for this age group was down 9.2 per cent from the previous month and nearly 28 per cent from the previous year.

Seco said there were 197, 837 people looking for work in March 2011, while the number of open positions in the month increased by more than 1,000 to nearly 22,000.
