In the World Tennis Association’s rankings issued on Monday, Bacsinszky had moved up four places to 44, while Schnyder went down three to 48.

Asked by swissinfo.ch how Bacsinszky had reacted to the news, her manager Alexandre Ahr said she had told him that of course she was happy, “but at the same time I consider Patty Schnyder a better player than me”.

This is the best ranking so far achieved by Bacsinszky, who turns 21 next month. She gained 70 points at the Italian Open last week, where she was knocked out in the second round by world number one, Serena Williams.

Her next goal is the French Open, which starts on May 23. Ahr has described that as her “favourite” tournament. She is aiming to get past the second round, which she has reached in the last three years.
