Annan hands Energy Globe Award to Helvetas
Swiss aid organisation Helvetas has won a prestigious international prize for ensuring sustainable water supply in the African state of Mozambique.
Helvetas – the Swiss Association for International Cooperation – was presented the award in the category “Water” by the former United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, at a ceremony in Brussels.
Water supply in Mozambique is inadequate in many locations, and less than half the population has access to clean drinking water.
The goal of the Helvetas project is to sustainably improve the water supply and community hygiene in the region of Cabo Delgado in the north of the country.
Since 1979, Helvetas, the authorities and the local rural population have built or renovated 2,000 water facilities.
Helvetas trains local water committees to operate and maintain the drinking water facilities.
