Floodwaters begin to ease
A statue in Widnau, north-eastern Switzerland, where the Rhine burst its banks on Sunday, flooding parts of the town. Meteoswiss, the national weather service, said the floods in St Gallen could be expected once a century.
Meteorologists are predicting the recent strong rainfall will ease in the coming days.
Although Switzerland has been spared a major catastrophe – in Germany, at least four people have died or are missing – the situation remains serious in many towns, with various houses, prisons, youth hostels and camp sites being evacuated.
