A chocolate feast in Bern

The biggest Toblerone ever made was shared out among the people of Bern on Saturday, as part of the brand's hundredth anniversary celebrations.

The giant bar weighed 100 kilos. Bern’s mayor, Alexander Tschäppät, helped to hand the pieces out.

Other attractions at the day-long chocolate festival, held on the square in front of Bern’s cathedral, included free concerts for the public, displays of chocolate creations by the city’s top confectioners, and a programme of events for children.

Organisers said the event had attracted around 15,000 people.

Bern won the right to host the anniversary celebration in a competition with Switzerland’s three other largest cities: its citizens proved to be the fastest in building a tower made of Toblerone boxes.

Toblerone was invented by Theodor Tobler in Bern in 1908. The company he founded now belongs to Kraft Foods. The factory – still the only one in the world producing the bar – has moved from the city into the suburb of Bern-Brunnen, where some 300 employees made 35,000 tonnes of it annually.
