Baby bears are boys

The two cubs in Bern’s new bear park – Berna and Urs – are male, the park authorities announced on Wednesday.

The animals’ sex was determined during vaccinations. It had been thought that at least one of the two was female.

Bear park director Bernd Schildger said that they would not be renaming Berna, “because the animals certainly don’t care what their names are”.

The babies were born during the winter and made their first appearance earlier this year. Since spring visitors to the park have been able to witness their playful antics on a daily basis.

The bears’ parents are Björk and Finn, who made headlines last year when he mauled a man who broke into the animals’ enclosure.
