Gustav Mahler: Symphony no 8. Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. Schweizer Kammerchor. WDR Rundfunkchor Köln. Zürcher Sängerknaben. Kinderchor Kaltbrunn. David Zinman, conductor a.o.
The Tonhalle Orchestra under David Zinman continue their Mahler cycle with the "Symphony of the Thousand", so named for his 8th symphony's monumental personnel requests. The orchestra, extented with choirs, vocal soloists and rarely used instruments, sounds light as a feather. Its well balanced dynamics make it float like a cloud. Which allows the listener at best to sound out the many different threads of both music and word, Mahler interwove into this special work.
