Swiss films honoured in Argentina

Two Swiss films, La Forteresse and La Mère, have received mentions in the human rights section of a prestigious international film festival.

A total of six Swiss film productions were screened at the 11th Buenos Aires Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente (BAFICI), which ended in the Argentinian capital on Sunday.

La Forteresse, directed by Fernand Melgar, is a documentary on Switzerland’s refugee policy filmed at a reception centre for asylum-seekers. It made the headlines on Thursday when one of the film’s characters, an Iraqi, was deported from Switzerland to Sweden after several months of legal wrangling.

La Mère, a Swiss-Russian co-production directed by Antoine Cattin and Pavel Kostomarov, focuses on a Russian mother who escapes from her violent husband with her nine children and sacrifices herself in the name of love.

BAFICI is the most important film event in Argentina apart from the Mar del Plata International Film Festival in November. Last year the festival attracted 220,000 visitors.
