Swiss resorts ring in New Year
New Year's Eve will be festive at Switzerland's top ski resorts this year, with a line-up that includes dancing, music and, of course, winter sports.
In Davos, the Silvester Party 2001 is being billed as one of the biggest New Year’s bashes in Switzerland, and will take place at the ice rink.
Guests can also welcome the New Year with opera music and cocktails at the Davos Conference Centre on January 1. Music will be provided by the Liechtenstein Symphony Orchestra, accompanied by guest singers and will include works by Verdi and Strauss.
St. Moritz offers a full day of New Year’s Eve celebrations. Sports fans can start mid-morning with the Ueli Koch Silvester Trophy for two-man bobsleigh at the Olympia Bob Run. Those interested in traditional Swiss alpine music can hear the Engadine alphorn group in the Plazza Mauritius in the afternoon.
To round off the day’s entertainment there will be an evening celebration at the Corviglia Tennis Centre.
The pedestrian zone in Gstaad is being turned into a huge open air disco for New Year’s Eve celebrations.
New Year’s Eve dinner and dancing at the Grand Hotel Victoria-Jungfrau in Interlaken comes at a price. For SFr680 ($400) per person, revellers can dance to the music of no fewer than four bands and enjoy an international buffet meal.
On New Year’s Day in Zermatt, the Matterhorn Music Society will brave the cold to give a concert in the church square.
