The “Grand Illusion” in Neuchatel

Three Neuchatel museums are this weekend opening three distinct exhibitions on a common theme - "The Grand Illusion".

The ethnography museum has chosen a poem by Arthur Rimbaud on “the deluge” as a launch pad for what it describes as a look at the multiple illusions of everyday life at the beginning of the 21st century, which add up in sum to the grand illusion of the title.

It lists these as including the Internet, stock options, plastic surgery, virtual reality, mobile telephones, genetic engineering, Chinese capitalism, the start up, the diplomatic world and postmodernism.

Meanwhile the city’s art and history museum includes a room of luminous blue, red and green cubes. When lit at the same time they are white, but when illuminated one at a time they revert to their original colour.

As for “The Grand Illusion” in the natural history museum, details have yet to be revealed of the approach it is taking on the chosen theme. It says the curators of the three museums had agreed to keep it secret until the opening of the exhibition.
