Charges laid against suspected Kenyan gunmen

Two men have been charged in a Kenyan court with attacking a vehicle carrying two Swiss tourists in a northern game reserve and killing the driver, a court official said.

Gunmen opened fire on the vehicle last Friday in the Shaba National Reserve, wounding one of the tourists, as it returned from a drive in the park.

The suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges of robbery with violence and murder and will be detained until the case is heard in January, a clerk in the court in the northern town of Isiolo said.

Kenyan security agents arrested the two suspects this week during an operation to flush out bandits and cattle rustlers from the area, which is notorious for violent robberies and clashes between nomads.

An official involved in the operation said they were still looking for three others suspected of taking part in the attack.                            

The attack was the third on Western tourists in Kenya in two months.
