Federer and Wawrinka advance in Paris
World number one Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland on Thursday reached the third round of the French Open tennis tournament.
Federer won 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-0, 6-4 against Albert Montanes of Spain. Although his serve was not broken, Federer lost the first set in a tiebreaker, which he’d led at one stage 4-3.
He described the game as “a good test”.
The Swiss, who has won 12 major titles in his career, still needs to win at Roland Garros to complete a career Grand Slam. Federer has reached the French Open final in the past two seasons but lost to Spain’s Rafael Nadal on both occasions.
Wawrinka advanced to the third round of the tournament with a 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4), 6-1 victory over Marin Cilic of Croatia. His next opponent will be Fernando Gonzalez of Chile.
