Federer reaches quarter-finals at French Open
Switzerland's Roger Federer has shot down a brave challenge from Julien Benneteau to go through to the quarter-finals of the French Open.
The world number one, seeking a first Roland Garros crown to complete his Grand Slam collection, now faces Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez on Wednesday.
Federer beat Frenchman Benneteau 6-4, 7-5, 7-5 on Monday, but he was broken while serving for each of the first two sets before closing them out.
The French Open is the only major championship Federer hasn’t won. He lost in the 2005 semi-finals, and the 2006 and 2007 finals – each time to his Spanish rival, Rafael Nadal.
