After failing to carry off the Australian Open tennis championship title last week, Switzerland's Martina Hingis is looking to redress her fortunes at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

Top-seeded Hingis, who lost to America’s Jennifer Capriati in straight sets in Melbourne, is bidding for her third consecutive Pan Pacific title.

Hingis’s first match will be in the second round, when she will face Zimbabwe’s Cara Black. The world number one and the other three top seeds – the American Lindsay Davenport, Russia’s Anna Kournikova and the South African Amanda Coetzer – all received first-round byes.

In first round matches played on Tuesday, fifth-seeded Sandrine Testud of France scored a 6-0, 6-4 victory over the American Kristina Brandi, while seventh-seeded Lisa Raymond beat her fellow American Lilia Osterloh 6-1, 6-4.

Testud, who was runner-up to Hingis last year, said she was looking forward to the next round. “I really like the court here and I have very good memories of last year,” the French veteran said.
