Russia bears down on national hockey squad
A strong third-period effort has failed to keep Switzerland from suffering their second defeat at the World Ice Hockey Championship in Canada.
The Swiss team held a talented Russian squad scoreless until 15:21 in the first period, when Russia’s Dmitri Kalinin struck against Swiss goalie Jonas Hiller.
The Russians followed with two more quick goals, including one by National Hockey League (NHL) superstar, Alexander Ovechkin.
The Swiss managed just eight shots on goal and trailed 4-0 by the end of the second period.
Switzerland rallied early in the third period, scoring a power play goal at the 40:32. It was followed four minutes later by a shorthanded goal by Julien Vauclair after two Swiss players were sent to the penalty box for hooking.
The 5-3 final score wins the Swiss side no points in the preliminary round of the 17-day tournament and will result in a re-match against the Russians on Wednesday.
Analysts had been impressed with Switzerland’s offensive talent but had not expected them to win against Russia, which includes nine NHL players.
