Switzerland's seesaw football championship took another turn on Sunday when St Gallen regained top spot after a thrilling 3-2 over Basel. The victory put St Gallen one point ahead of Lugano and Zurich Grasshoppers.

St Gallen took a 2-0 lead through Zwyssig (45th minute) and Nixon (55th minute) and seemed to be coasting to an easy home victory.

But Basel, despite playing with nine men after having two players sent off, recovered with two goals by Huggel and Yakin, bringing the two sides level with just six minutes remaining. Basel’s dream of a deserved point was short-lived, with St Gallen’s Zellweger scoring the winner after 95 minutes.

Grasshoppers took a commanding lead in the first 50 minutes, scoring three goals. The game seemed won, but Servette then fought back with two goals.

Grasshoppers then scored another goal through a penalty by Chapuisat. Servette tried to come back again, with a goal by Obradovic, who brought the final score to 4-3.

In the overall standings, Zurich (28 points) come behind Grasshoppers in fourth place. Behind them are Basel (27 points), Servette (27 points), Lausanne (26 points) and Sion (25 points).
